Character Name: Kazuki Kurusu
Character Canon: Buddy Daddies
Canon Point: Episode 1, right before their Christmas Eve job.
Age: 28
Crime: Causing the deaths of his wife and unborn child.
Background: Kazuki doesn't remember his parents or a lot of his early life; the summary is basically he was orphaned as a child, and presumably grew up in an orphanage for most of his life. Once out, he fell into enough of a bad crowd that organized crime was his only real chance at making his way in life. Organized crime shifted into being a hitman and intel gatherer for the group only known in canon as the Organization.
There was this one job though that went sideways. Shot in the arm, Kazuki literally stumbled into the woman who would become his wife, Yuzuko. And the future mother of his child! Kazuki was over the moon about it. Unfortunately, we also learn that, 5 years before the series begins, Kazuki lost both his wife and his child during one of his hits - Yuzuko and his unborn child die in fiery explosion while he watched, unable to do anything to stop it. He blames himself completely.
Kazuki starts to fail at jobs more and more often, the guilt of what happened to Yuzuko taking its toll. This is presumably when gambling, drinking and women become major vices for Kazuki. About two years later, his job handler, Kyutaro Kugi gives him a last chance mission to protect Rei Suwa, and the most dynamic team ever was born! Except not - After Rei passes out due to hunger, Kazuki takes him back to his place to feed him, then his house gets shot up, and they go their separate ways... until Kyutaro shoves Kazuki back with Rei again and they end up living and working together in a weird coworker-housekeeper/housekeepee relationship. Kazuki gathers the intel, does the investigation, makes the plan, Rei carries out the hits. Life is at least okay even if it's not great.
Three years later, Christmas 2022, our story begins. One little human trafficker having a Christmas party at the Varint Hotel needs to get whacked, and our two intrepid hitmen take the job. Too bad they're about to meet the child that'll change their whole lives.
Personality:
Kazuki is an affable young man, playful and friendly with most people, and quick to make fast friends. If you want proof, ask all the moms he's made friends with at the daycare his daughter goes to! Ask the ladies at the club he used to frequent. And ask all the women he's had to seduce to get information and intel for work. That said, don't let it be said that Kazuki is a doormat - he is usually willing to stand up for what he needs to, and that includes getting rough if necessary. Kazuki's basic nature is no doubt a product of his youth. It was probably easier just to do what he could whenever the situation changed, and it likely changed a lot as an orphan.
Nothing about that sunny nature and warm disposition is fake. However, underneath is kind of a mess. Kazuki doesn't remember his family, but has always wanted one, so the loss of his wife and child broke him in a lot of ways. He probably had actual optimism at one point that he could be a hitman and have a family at the same time, but their deaths pulled him away from that possible reality completely. That was when he decided that if he was going to live this life, he couldn't have attachments. Attachments don't make you weak, but they put other people in harm's way. This is something he internalizes deeply and expresses to Rei when Rei tries to adopt a stray cat, and when Kazuki makes the incredibly tough decision to send Miri back to her birth mother. This changes throughout the course of the show as his relationships with both Rei and Miri develop and grow.
He has so much guilt over Yuzuko's death that he has been sending money to Yuzuko's sister for the past five years. Every job, she gets part. He knows it won't repay shit but it's the only thing he can do. But at the same time, he won't face her, or talk to her about it. Kazuki avoids his problems a lot and pushes them down under his sunny nature, while beating himself up in private.
When it comes down to it, Kazuki is very soft hearted even if he's someone who exists in a seedy underworld. The attachments he says are impossible to keep are things that bring even a little bit of joy into his life. He falls so quickly for Miri's charms despite knowing it's a bad idea, for example, and this is also shown in how he came to live with Rei. Kyutaro sent Kazuki to Rei's new place with instructions to drop some paperwork off for a job. Kazuki ended up seeing the state of the guy's apartment - an actual shitpit that hadn't been cleaned, full of garbage, dirt and rotting food. Not to mention, Rei's hygiene left a lot to be desired... and Kazuki couldn't handle it. He tells Rei himself that he couldn't sit back and watch him live like that anymore. And that's how Kazuki ended up staying with Rei. Started off as a house cleaner, ended up as a friend. Truthfully, Kazuki needed that too. That feeling of connection he lost when his family was killed.
Kazuki does take a lot of responsibility on his shoulders, taking on the burden of planning and preparation for both family matters and work matters. He plans basically all of the outings that he, Rei and Miri take, for example, and calls himself the brains of the operation when he and Rei have a job. This does weigh on him, but he also takes pride in a job well done, and loves to hear it (especially in regard to his cooking skills!) He also takes fierce pride in caring for Miri as best as he can and being the best papa ever - to call him attached is an understatement. One time she goes missing, he is fine with plotting the torture of the imaginary suspect. He's also someone who is quick to anger but fairly quick to cool - grudges aren't his thing unless someone does something particularly messed up (like, who knows, shooting him.) And he's a terrible liar! What a trait to have as a hitman, huh?
Abilities:
Kazuki is a stock human with no magical abilities or anything one wouldn't see in real life. He has pistol skills being a hitman, and something of a brawler so he can generally hold his own in a fight against normal people. In terms of non-fighting abilities, he has some hacking skills.
Other general skills: cooking and cleaning! Better than your average home cook.
